Stadt Blankenberg: castle, town wall and Katharinenturm

About 5.5 km east of Hennef town centre, Stadt Blankenberg sits on a steep ridge above a loop of the Sieg. The Counts of Sayn built their castle here between 1150 and 1180, and the settlement received town rights in 1245.

Parts of the castle with its towers and town wall survive, as do the Katharinenturm with a local history museum, the church of St. Katharina and half-timbered houses, most of them from the 18th century. Below the southern town wall lies a private wine garden planted in 1985, next to a wine press almost 400 years old; the wine trail leads through former vineyard slopes.

About 10 km by car. The S 12 and S 19 run from Hennef (Sieg) to Blankenberg (Sieg); from there it is about 1.6 km uphill on foot to the Katharinenturm.

From 11 Dec 2026 to 9 Jul 2027, according to go.Rheinland, the S 12 and S 19 do not run between Hennef (Sieg) and Au (Sieg), so they do not serve Blankenberg (Sieg). Replacement buses run during this period.
